The year 1847: The year before the beginning of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I, the year of the foundation of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the time of Grillparzer, Nestroy, Strauss and Liszt, and the year in which Gerstner was founded.

On the 24th of April 1847, Anton and Barbara Gerstner opened a small pastry shop in the heart of the city. Shortly after the opening, the nearby Imperial Court became one of the first regular clients.  In 1873, Anton Gerstner was appointed Imperial Court Confectioner. Gerstner served official dinners, state receptions and concert intermissions in the Schoenbrunn Palace, and even managed and catered all events at the Emperor's pavilion during the World Exhibition in the "Wiener Prater".

That was the beginning of the long and successful Gerstner history. Since then, Gerstner has continued its pioneering spirit.  Gustav Mahler defined tradition as the transfer of fire and not the adoration of ash.  Similarly, we face the challenge of renewal on a daily basis, but also want to carry on our great tradition and history.
