HOFBURG Vienna - the history

When the Vienna Hofburg was built in the first half of the 13th Century, it was not only the main residence of the imperial family, but also the center of the Habsburg Empire.  This empire developed over a period of 700 years by the Austrian rulers who lived in the imperial residence.
During the rise of Austria as a European superpower in the Baroque period, the Imperial Palace was the political and artistic scene of world history. Maria Theresa, Joseph II and Metternich lived and worked here. Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt and Strauss made music in this house. The Imperial Palace received its present appearance under Emperor Franz Joseph I.

Today, the Austrian Federal President and several ministers and state secretaries work in the magnificent state rooms during their service to the State. Other important cultural institutions also have their headquarters in the former imperial winter residence.
